While the prospect of positive change can be exciting, therapy can be intimidating for many. It is my hope that the information here will demystify the process for you, and allow you to more fully engage with therapy.
I understand and appreciate how hard it is to reach out in a moment of vulnerability. I applaud you for taking that risk–it is a courageous act, and one that I take very seriously.
What to Expect
I always recommend clients take advantage of the free phone consultation I offer, as it is a great opportunity for us to get to know each other. I typically ask clients a little about themselves, what is leading them to consider therapy, and then share how I may be able to help. It is also a great chance for you to ask questions about my approach, style, etc., and if we both decide to move forward, we can talk about scheduling availability.
Once we schedule your appointment, you’ll receive an appointment confirmation by email, as well as access to your client portal and my intake forms. I prefer to have clients fill this paperwork out prior to sessions, because then it allows me more time to focus on you and your needs. All forms can be electronically completed for your convenience, and you can even store a credit card on file, if that is your preferred method of payment.
At your first session, I’ll give you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have regarding my informed consent/privacy practices. From there, we’ll spend the majority of the first session getting to know each other. I’ll gather more information about your unique story and provide some direction on where therapy may go. Most people come in with a presenting problem, but often find themselves going in another direction as therapy continues…that is normal and perfectly okay!
As far as the following sessions, each one may look different in terms of structure, tone, and content. We may follow up on previous sessions or explore new topics. In most cases, I will allow you to discuss whatever is on your mind. However, there may be times where I become more directive or try to refocus conversation. Some of the techniques I use may include: providing some basic education, breathing/mindfulness activities, identifying emotions and physiological responses, reframing beliefs, various exercises, and/or homework. I tend to capitalize on existential themes, meaning the big questions surrounding concepts of uncertainty, responsibility, choice, identity, meaning, death, authenticity, and more. These often are woven throughout our stories in ways that we may or may not be conscious of.
It’s important to understand that while therapy may evoke feelings of discomfort at times, it is always a safe place. I will regularly check in with you to see how you are doing and monitor the course of our work together.
Concluding therapy can sometimes be a challenge for clients, but it is my goal to work myself out of the job! I see no greater success than watching a client leave with more clarity, peace, empowerment, confidence, and fulfillment than when they first entered my office.
I’m looking forward to working with you!
